Time to sell your stocks - the world is coming to an end!

This one has caused a lot buzz in the media lately. World’s largest supercollider LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is going live in May 2008. This 27 kilometers long doomsday device is largest man-made machine ever and it’s sole purpose is to accelerate protons up to 99.999999% of speed of light, and then collide them with other particles. This collision is then supposed to create conditions similiar to the Big Bang, and from that pencil-necked geeks at CERN are hoping to learn something new about the life, universe and everything.

However LHC will also create something called micro black holes, and even though these tiny black holes should evaporate almost instantly, some people are not so confident and believe these small black holes will SUCK in all the scientists, CERN, Switzerland, France and finally the whole earth and the universe and DESTROY all the life in the cosmos as we know it.

Nobody is sure what excatly will happen when LHC is turned on, but it’s not a bad idea to play it safe and start partying now. :-)

More about LHC and destruction of the universe in here.

Your story starts off well enough. The facts are correct. But then you veer out of control when you say an Earth-black-hole would suck away the entire cosmos. Even if the Earth were compacted down to a billionth of its size, it would still be revolving around the sun. The moon would still be revolving around it–it just wouldn’t be a big blue marble any more.

You are also right when you say that noone knows whats going to happen when they turn it on. But is partying the right and responible answer?

There is a scientific model that claims that the micro black holes are likely to be stable voracious planet munching beasts. That scientific model is new and currently under heavy debate in the SciAm.com blog-space (just enter the SciAm search box with my name) Free copies of the model are available for download via the threads of my blog. No, partying isn’t the right action–vetting the science is the right action. As long as my model stands, there is reasonable doubt to postpone LHC. Honestly, I don’t want to cause those guys trouble. If it wasn’t for this model, I’d love to be routing for them. However, none who have attempted to challenge it have done so with evidence

The sound you just heard was the joke, on a geosynchronous orbit, passing over that person.
